The South Beach Diet has a very glamorous appeal to it. Named after a location in Miami, it conjures up images of a beach body and this is very clever marketing. You might almost expect the Baywatch cast to be on it.

The South Beach Diet is one of the most popular diets around and can be considered a low carbohydrate diet that is not too extreme.

Does it work?

Yes it does. It was created by a cardiologist, Arthur Agatston in 2003. With the South Beach Diet, you’ll be required to eat foods that high in fiber, have a low glycemic index, rich in protein, fats and unsaturated fats.

The diet is comprised of 3 phases. In phase one, you’ll achieve fast weight loss and put an end to your cravings. In phase 2, you’ll reach your ideal weight by eating foods that are delicious and nutritious. In phase 3, you’ll learn how to maintain your weight so that the excess pounds don’t creep back in again.

You’ll need to follow these stages, stick to the good fats and also make the right diet choices. The South Beach Diet does deliver results because it is based on sound concepts. However, the marketing can be misleading with the bold claims of quick and easy weight loss.

This seems to be par for the course when it comes to the weight loss industry. When billions of dollars are at stake, saying that your diet will give slow and steady weight loss is just not going to cut it. People want fast results and they want it yesterday.

So, the South Beach Diet may have claims that should be taken with a pinch of salt… but that shouldn’t detract from its effectiveness. If you exercise good sense and do not expect overnight miracles, this is a good diet to follow.

In fact, Agatston created the South Beach diet because his own patients were not experiencing improvement with the low-fat and high carb diet that the American Heart Association was recommending.

Therefore, the South Beach Diet has been tested and proven to work. If you apply the techniques in the diet, it will work for you. It is not restrictive like the Atkins diet and it’s not hardcore like the paleo diet. The South Beach Diet is sensible and you can definitely comply with it.

What makes the South Beach diet so fantastic is that it’s sustainable and doesn’t swing to extremes. While most diets can help a person lose weight, the key to successful weight loss is being able to keep the weight off.

This is where most diets fail. With the Lemonade or Cabbage Soup Diet, the weight quickly returns once you get back on a normal diet. The paleo diet is so hardcore that your entire life has to change just to accommodate it. The Atkins diet while effective, is so restrictive that you end up feeling lethargic.

The South Beach Diet is perfect and strikes a good balance. It is low carb but not excessively low. It’s similar to the Mediterranean diet where the approach is about eating healthy, eating in moderation and being active. These are the cornerstones to successful weight loss.

You can definitely be beach body ready by adopting the South Beach Diet. Of course, you will need to put in the sweat equity at the gym to get a body that’s rippling with muscles or a bikini body that turns heads. However, to the average person who just wants to lose 15 or 20 pounds of excess fat, the South Beach Diet is a fantastic way to get the job done. Do give it a try.
