If you are trying to build up muscle and get some bulk, then a good protein powder is essential. But there are literally thousands of options (if not more) out there when it comes to protein powder. For a person who is just starting out trying to build muscle, it can be difficult to pick out a good protein powder. So, in this comparison review we are going to look at 5 of the top protein powders, and give you a good idea of the pros and cons of each.

1) Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder

Pros

One of the best things about Optimum Nutrition’s protein powder is that they offer a variety of flavors. With a lot of protein powders, it is necessary to hide the taste in a shake with other ingredients in order to mask the unpleasant taste. But, with Optimum Nutrition, you should be able to find a flavor you like, which makes masking the taste unnecessary. They have close to two dozen flavors to choose from and many of them are dessert based. You can get a vanilla ice cream flavor, a rocky road flavor, a chocolate milk flavor, etc. It also comes in a nice variety of sizes as well. You can opt for a smaller size to try out the various flavors, and then once you find a flavor you like you can buy one of the many bigger sizes they offer. The sizes range from 1 pound, all the way up to 10 pounds. Also, their actual protein mix is very effective and that is a big reason why so many people swear by Optimum Nutrition.

Cons

Although some of the flavors are quite good, others can be bad. While it is understandable, especially given the huge amount of flavors, it does mean you need to do a lot of experimentation to figure out which of the flavors you like. Also, the actual mix itself has a tendency to clump together, which makes blending it a bit more difficult. It is recommended that you blend in small doses, to prevent the mix from clumping.

2) Orgain Organic Plant Based Protein Powder

Pros

One of the big selling points of this protein powder is that it is made from all-natural, vegan ingredients. All the proteins come from organic plants. For those out there who are really watching their weight and their health, this is a very good option. Likewise, the protein powder also contains 5 grams of fiber. Also, this protein powder is free of things like GMOs, soy, gluten. For those who want a genuine, vegan protein powder, this is your best option.

Cons

The taste of the protein powder is pretty average. It isn’t repulsive, but it doesn’t taste good either. Most people will probably need to mask the taste with something sweet, like fruit. Plus, the actual mixture itself has quite a gritty texture and this will remain, no matter how much you blend it.

3) BSN Syntha-6 Protein Powder

Pros

In addition to its protein component, Syntha-6 also has 5 grams of fiber and around 10 grams of various amino acids, both of which are very good things to have. It also mixes very easily, unlike some other protein powders. With some powders, you have to worry about the mixture clumping and not getting thoroughly mixed. But, the Syntha-6 mixes extremely well and always produce a nice, creamy shake. In terms of flavor, it is not the best tasting protein powder around, but it does an adequate job and most of the flavors taste pretty good.

Cons

Some people might find that there is not enough protein in this powder. Those trying to build some serious muscle may want to look elsewhere for a powder with a higher amount of protein in it. The powder also has a very high calorie and carb count, it is much higher than some other protein powders which give the same amount of protein, with fewer calories.

4) Vega One All-In-One Plant Based Protein Powder

Pros

This product has around 20 grams of protein, which is average, but it also has a huge amount of other nutrients in it. For example, it gives you a quarter of your necessary daily fiber intake and it has a nice amount of vitamins, antioxidants, and omega-3s in it. Plus, as the name suggests, because it is plant based it is completely vegan. It is also free of gluten, dairy, and soy.

Cons

The taste isn’t all that great, it is not the worst tasting protein powder out there, but it really isn’t all that great either. Some people say it also has a bit of a laxative effect, and if you drink this regularly, you should be expecting to use the bathroom a bit more than usual. It could also afford to be a bit heavier on the actual protein content, as 20 grams is a bit low compared to some other powders.

5) Isopure Low Carb Protein Powder

Pros

This powder has a very nice amount of protein in it, at 25 grams, which is pretty high. So, if you are looking for a powder based solely on protein content, then this is the powder for you. It comes with an unflavored option, so you can just make your shake without worrying about the taste of the powder. It also has no dairy and no gluten in it.

Cons

You should really opt for the unflavored variety because the actual taste of the flavored powders is just not that good. Furthermore, mixing the shake can be a bit of a hassle, as the powder has an annoying tendency to clump unless it is mixed just right. This can be overcome by mixing it very slowly and by using cold water.
