Belly fat is one of the most stubborn and unwanted types of fat.

Even people who are not considered clinically overweight or obese can suffer from a little bit of excess belly fat – just enough to make them not want to wear their bikini with pride on the beach or put on that gorgeous dress or snazzy top they’ve been keeping in the wardrobe for months.

One of the reasons people believe they are gaining belly fat is because of carbohydrates, so it’s important to understand the role they play in storing fat around our stomachs.

Which foods have lots of carbs?

There are many foods which contain high levels of carbohydrate, such as bread, rice, pasta and potatoes.

However, not all carbs are equal, since there are some good ones and some bad ones.

Avoiding carbs to try and shed some belly fat will only work if you avoid the bad carbs.

Since it’s so easy to make a bowl of pasta, grab a sandwich or snack on a bag of chips in your lunch break, cutting down on carbs requires quite a lot of thinking and planning ahead.

Which carbs promote belly fat gain?

Carbs in foods containing white flour, such as white rice, white pasta, white bread, cakes, crisps and cookies, are the culprits which prevent you from losing the fat around your belly easily.

When you eat them, particularly if you eat them in large quantities, there is a spike in your blood sugar levels, which makes it very difficult to lose belly fat.

Apart from not helping you get rid of belly fat, it also encourages even more belly fat to accumulate if you consume these carbs over a prolonged period of time.

What should carbs be replaced with?

You still need to eat carbs in order to have a healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle, but you should concentrate on getting good carbs, such as wholegrain foods and potatoes.

These will generally contain the same amount of calories, but the content of the food itself is what makes a big difference.

You should also replace some of your carb intake with protein, such as fish, meat, eggs and nuts.

Plan your meals in advance, and if you’re eating fast food, try to opt for the items on the menu which don’t have as many carbs.

You can always replace a sandwich made with white bread by choosing one made with wholewheat bread.

6 Foods That Can Help You Burn Belly Fat

Many people, when trying to lose belly fat, think that starving themselves and cutting right back on foods is the way to go.

However, the problem is often eating the wrong foods rather than eating too many foods.

Here are six foods you should add to your diet if you’re trying to shed excess belly fat.

1) Spinach and greens

Filling your plate with green vegetables is a healthy way to go in any case, but if you’re trying to lose fat from anywhere on your body, it can really give you a boost.

Apart from giving you more energy, it’s fill of antioxidants and other nutrients that will help you to shed the weight.

2) Nuts

Nuts are high in good fats, and if you give this to your body, it will help to burn your belly fat since it won’t feel the need to store it.

You should always consume high-calorie foods like nuts in moderation, however, as too much of them could cause you to gain weight.

3) Fat-free dairy products

Opt for the lighter options when it comes to milk, cheese and yogurt.

Dairy products have calcium which our bodies need, and you can use fat-free yogurt as a substitute for fatty and sweet treats after dinner.

4) Eggs

You can eat them in the morning, as a snack during the day or with a fresh salad at lunch time.

Eggs are very versatile and you shouldn’t struggle finding a way to fit them into your diet. You should find free-range eggs and consume no more than seven per week.

If you take out the yolk, the egg white contains around 17 calories which means it won’t take up too much of your daily allowance.

5) Blueberries

It’s no surprise that blueberries are hailed as one of the superfoods when you’re trying to lose weight.

This fruit is full of antioxidants which is linked to the quick burning of stubborn belly fat.

However, they are also rich in natural sugars, so they should be eaten in moderation – try adding them to a high-fiber granola in the morning or packing some for lunch with oranges, apples and bananas.

6) Bananas

Bananas have a low sugar level, which means you can safely eat a couple per day without having to worry about consuming too much sugar.

They are also high in fiber, which is one of the nutrients you should aim to have if you want to lose fat.
